Orthodontics is the part of dentistry that moves teeth into better positions and guides how the upper and lower jaws meet. Most people come in because of how their smile looks, but crowded, gapped or badly meeting teeth — a malocclusion — also change how you chew, how easily you can clean between your teeth, and how evenly your teeth wear over decades. Treatment applies light, continuous pressure through fixed brackets and wires or through a series of removable clear aligners, so the bone around each root remodels and the tooth settles in its new position. When the teeth are where they should be, a retainer holds them there — that last stage is not optional, and it does not have a finish date.
